Chemical change: Follow-up Questions

I. Objective
Observe that no new material is formed when a chemical change occurs.
Observe that the product of a chemical change cannot be brought to its original form.
Show examples of chemical change.

II. Subject Matter
Chemical Change
Science Ideas: Sometimes when a new material changes it doesn’t look like the old material. Its properties are diff. This kind of change is called a chemical change.
New materials are formed in chemical reaction. During chemical reaction. The properties of the new material are diff. from those of the original material.
Some chemical reactions take place rapidly. Other chemical reactions take place more slowly.
Science Processes: Observing, Inferring
Materials:
New words: Chemical change, chemical reaction

III. Suggested Activities:
A. Motivation
Have pupils observe when a candle burns. Have them list down the changes observed other than the physical change.

-Identifying conditions when a chemical change occurs
-Identifying the products of chemical change
-Observing new material formed in chemical change
-Observing the product of a chemical change
2. Identify the conditions when chemical change occurs.
3. Identify the product of chemical change.
4. Observe that new material is formed when a chemical change occurs/that the product of a chemical change cannot be brought back to its original form.

Ask these questions:
a. What is a chemical change?
b. What are the conditions when chemical change occurs?
